To: dale_at_unofficialbmw.com

The E46 M3 will debut at the Frankfurt show this September. No V8 (although the factory tested an M5 engined car) -- 3.4 liter inline 6 with 343 hp, 6 speed Getrag manual or optional SMG (with revised, "more powerful" electronics, and shift buttons on the steering wheel). The new car will weigh 176 pounds more than the current M3. 0-60 mph target is 5.2 seconds (same as M5). Heavily re-worked chassis with widened tracks, redesigned stub axles, significantly lowered ride height, stiffened springs and dampers, and 17" wheels/tires. Coupe will come first as 2001 model in USA; convertible a year later; unknown as to whether a sedan or wagon. The M3's development chief, Gerhardt Richter stated that "The emphasis has changed over the years. It is now more luxurious, though the inherent sportiness and driving fun remains."
