Changing the struts yourself is a fairly easy job. You need to have access or rent a spring compressor. If you are new to the DIY world, I would highly recommend purchasing a Bentleys Manual. It will pay dividends. For this job, check your local library, may be able to check out a haynes or chiltons that will be adequate. for your which strut part of the question may want to go to www.UUCdigest.com or www.bimmer.org and ask the question. Much more performance oriented. Also check the FAQ on this sites home page. Haven't been there in a while, may have some info for you.

Bilsteins are very stiff and will last only for 30-50K miles. They have a lifetime rebuild guarantee, but they have to go back to the factory for rebuilding. I use Boge Turbo Gas shocks. They are a bit stiffer than stock, but still not too hard.
