I am assuming that this means the pads need to be replaced, right? How difficult is this to do by myself? Any gotchas?

I just replaced my brake pads.
While you're there, check the rotors.
Some rotors can't be turned, they're
too thin. They may need replacement.
Also the brake sensor should be replaced.
This will make the brake lining light
reset.

I recommend mintex pads. No noise
and very reliable.
