Your model is the e30. E30 is the body code the later 91 on being the e36. As for the dash problem it could well be the Nicad batteries on the circuit board. I've knowjn people replace them themselves but I've tried with little success. On my freinds M535i we used a company who supplied a replacement board on an exchange basis fairly reasonably. The guy is also very helpful so you could give him a ring and explain your problems and he will advise i'm sure. These batteries can cause all sorts of problems. I'll look up the guys number and re-post it on the board.
