Sounds to me like you have either a vacuum leak or the Idle Control Valve needs replacing. I would check all the vacuum lines and check the ridged air delivery tube between the air mass meter and the manifold, especially the bottom for cracks. A quick check is to spray components with WD 40, simple green, etc. If the idle momentarily improves you have found the area of the leak. Not sure about the ix, but the 325i idle is computer controlled and cannot be adjusted.
