Is there a required service for timing belt or chain on an 88 325i? What is the service interval? My father purchased this car in 1998 with 40,000 miles on it. Shortly after that the timing belt (chain?) broke, causing much damage to the engine. That doesn't seem like much mileage to result in a failure of the timing belt. Anyone have any idea why this would fail so soon? |

Relacement interval for timing belts on 325's is either 50,000miles or 60,000miles. (Sorry.. can't remember which). However, there is also an age factor, and despite mileage, they should be replaced occassionally. I'm not sure what the time interval would be, but I think twelve years on an original belt is too long.

50-60K miles or every four years as I remember. They are rubber/fiber belts and will deteriorate just aging. Sorry about the hit your dad took.
