I have a 90 325i convertibe and I just replaced the temp sensor on the thermostat housing and my temp gauge is still flopping around. Sometimes it works and sometimes it bounces from cold to middle.

Should I replace the gauge next?

Anyone know where I can get a VDO temp gauge for a 90 325i 6cly?

Pull the cluster, tighten the brass nut behind the temp gauge.

....

OK, just read your other thread.

To re-flow solder joints, get a cheap-o soldering iron from Rat Shack, pull the cluster, take it apart as much as you are comfortable with, and start going over every single solder joint.

Just a touch is all that's usually needed. The idea is to re-melt the solder to remove any cracks in the 20+ year old solder joints.
Many solder joints on BMW electronics from the factory were "cold joints", meaning they didn't have enough heat in them and didn't have the correct strength after they cooled as a result.

No, never got the brake problem sorted out. Thanks for the gauge info. I ordered it and lets hope it works.

I think I am going to start looking for another car. This one is having too many problems for what it is work (blue book value) and I can't see putting money into repairing it.

If/When I get another one, I will put this one on ebay and let someone fix it up.

I had same issue, try an older temp sending unit, the old saying is true... they don't make them like they used to.. I put in one from 15 years ago and the temp gauge works like a charm...

I had to bite the bullet and buy a new car. With the ABS problem and the temp gauge, it was an unreliable car as my only vehicle. I got 12 years out of it and I will miss it. I can always get another BMW in the future.

Thanks for all your help.
