|
|
Hi people
I just got a quistion for Engine oil use for the bimmer
I was told at the BMW shop to use 15w-40 full syntetci of course
but I see alot of people writing different like
5w-30 or4w-40, even some say use 10w-30!!!
So thus why in doubt and I woul of course prefer using the oil vicinity that is correct all along and not switch to different once from time to time as I tread my engine as my best friend, as my lover and girlfriend, she never complains always runs and hey she´s it the one bringing me from a-z
So I hope there is one here who can give me correct answer for the oil vicinity, and oh I have to add I live in a place very cold, right now we got
- 27 outside but hey the bimmer always starts.... |

Motor oil is a religious subject. What weight are you now using?
My '97 owner's manual states to use 15W40 for temperatures between -10 and 30 deg C, and 5W30 between -30 and 10.
Our outside temperature rarely goes below 0 deg C, so I use 20W50 year-round.
The important thing is to change the oil often. I go about 4800 km between oil and filter changes. _________________

It sure is!!!
I also did some recearch while waiting on Castrol´s homepage
and found this
-20°C til 10°C, 10W-30
-20°C til 20°C, 10W-40
over -15°C, 15W-40
under 10°C, 5W-30
under 0°C, 5W-20
A bit much I think but right now I am using 5w-30 and is why I am asking to because I am about to make oile change and I do aprox 5000km myself before I change oil and filter so we do oil change both almost same distance, nice
Te reason why I ask so much is because where I live now I have not lived before I come from Denmark but moved up to Sweden 400km north of Stockholm and here is pretty cold in winter, is crazy if your not used to it hahaha. good thing is the car is, I bought up here and is used to long distances and the weather to but now I am the owner and I got to find out what oil I need for the winter because last year record was -43 degrees Right now we have only -7 but last week -22 so it goes up and down right now and then it changes and stay belowe the -22 down to the -40
and that is why I am concerned about the oil even the previous owner just laughed at me hahaha told me dont worry it doesnt matter just use the same brand and he has always used Castrol but as I said now I am the owner and I need use the proper one because I like drive quick drivin
and still tread the engine+gear box well..
but I think I will go for the 15w-40 or else the 10W-30
to be all safe, what you think about that? |

I'd stay with the BMW recommendations (5W30) I stated above, until you see how the car reacts to the cold. _________________

Ialso just found it in my ownser manual
page 141
Approved oils are in SAE classes
5W-40 and 5W-30.<
These oils may be used for driving in all
ambient temperatures.
and also found this as there was a link in the owners manual under oil change
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Owner/SyntheticEngineOils.aspx
And on the bottom of that page is a pdf file with these spec ready to download
http://test.resource.bmwusa.com/Pdf_2861cf6b-ce4e-4492-8bd7-6bb12c1eea2c.arox

Better stay with the bmw recommendations for sure...
