It is 99.9% a Break Light Switch that must be replaced for the message to go away. The switch is located under the dashboard right at the Break Pedal. Easy to replace but requires flexibility to get to it, as space is limited in access. |

There was a huge string about this very thing a couple of years ago.
Here is the story: The switch has four contacts. Two switch the current to the brake lights and the other two signal the computer to measure the brake light current. If the contacts signaling the computer contact first the computer measures no brake light current and sets a fault. Even after the other contacts close and current starts the fault remains until the ignition switch is turned off.
The contacts carrying the current wear faster so this problem eventually occurs.
On the replacement switches the timing of the contacts is critical. Some aftermarket switches will still give the fault.
The OEM switch will be OK but it is silly expensive. I think Pelican sells two different switches. I seem to remember that one is OK and the other is not. It has been a long time so I am not sure about this. I wouldn't know which is the good one at any rate unless they are claiming that one is OEM.
Mine failed right before a trip and I was desperate so I got one from Auto Zone. It has been fine. I think it was about $20.

Thanks Phil it seems there are 2 switches one is mechanical the other is electronic. I think they are around 25 to 30 bucks and say they are oem. Think I[ll give the mecanical one a try.
