|
|
Hi:
Today the ABS and traction control lights of my 95 325 decided to stay on.
I used to hear a definite "click" next to the firewall (where the ABS pump is located) at the time the ABS light will go out during self checking. Now it is a more muffled click, the light flickers once and stays on. I looked at both ABS solenoids in the fuse box and they seem to actuate.
I do not believe it is any wheel sensor because after trying several times, I finally got a louder click and the lights went off and stayed off for the duration of the drive until next time I started the car.
Any ideas where to start will be appreciated.

Update:
I had the ABS codes red by my mechanic. Initially a bunch of codes showed up. He reset them all and then we drove the car in a big parking lot. The following codes came up:
Total codes: 001
Code001:
82 Wheel-speed sensor, front right, not installed or faulty
113 Wheel-speed information, front left, not detected
He mentioned to me that sometimes it will flag a speed sensor when in reality is the ABS control unit or the pump. But there is no way to test without being certain that the speed sensors are good.
Any way to test these sensors that you guys know?
Thanks,

hey Alex
I had the same problem on my car, and it was the speed sensor. Don't know of a way to test it though _________________ joe

The front sensors tend to get dirty; they are magnetic and the tips collect metal filings from the brakes. You could try cleaning them first. You could try comparing the resistance of the front sensors with the rear ones, but you need an oscilloscope for a definitive test. If you do order new, I would maybe get only one to start to see if the code for that side goes away. |

I should say that this problem started after I changed the front struts. My only concern with the codes is that both sensors are giving errors, which could point to a computer problem. I will try to get the sensors out today and order only one as suggested. _________________

Alex, did you do the struts yourself?
when I tried to do mine, I couldn't find a spring compressor which compressed the springs enough to swap out the struts. I even went to a local garage, and their wall mount compressor couldn't to the job either. Had to visit the dealer and have them use their compressor. _________________ joe

I used a cheap pair of screw type holders. I have been using them since I go t to this blessed country for all sort of cars, even a Ford Scorpio. Remember those?? _________________

what did you do to solve the problem? Eventually I will need to do this again, and would like to know how to do it !! _________________ joe

Installed the sensor that was not being detected and the lights went off !!!.
The removal of the old sensor was not trivial though. The M6 bolt was seized and had to drill it out and re-tap. The original sensor had a metal casing that was also seized in the knuckle hole. In any case, nothing that a good driveway mechanic cannot do.
The old sensor had two terminals, and was open. The new sensor has three and the resistance between the two that correspond to the old one was 1160ohms.
Thanks and cheers
