Any thoughts on what could cause both lights to come on and stay on at the same time?
Thanks! |

You don't identify the car. We can only guess what's wrong.
I suspect that, if it's an early car, the ABS module has failed, since it controls traction, too. _________________

Sorry, it's a '99 528i - sport package, manual transmission. If that's it, any thoughts on how / how much to replace the module? |

Thanks - I will! Another question - I just used my Peake tool and got the following codes:
7b - Elec thermostat control final stage
A8 - Elec thermostat mechanically jammed open
dE - Coolant temp too low for closed loop operation
d6 - Vehicle speed signal not present
CC - Idle control system - idle speed not plausible
The check engine light has been coming on as well.
Any thoughts about whether this is a single issue (e.g., elect thermostat?) or multiple issues. Any ideas you have about the fix and related costs would be very helpful.
Thank you again for all of your help!

First thing to do is replace the thermostat; it's jammed open, and the engine cannot attain operating temperature. That will probably fix 7B, A8, and dE, and maybe CC, but the last one could also be a dirty idle control valve.
d6 is probably related to a bad wheel speed sensor. I believe that it's the left rear sensor that supplies vehicle speed.
Do you DIY? If so, you can get pretty accurate parts prices here: www.realoem.com. If not, you'd need to get a estimate on repairs, after a diagnostic fee.
You can get a list of independent BMW shops here: www.bimrs.org. _________________

Hi - thanks!
Someone was supposed to have replaced the thermostat about 2 weeks ago - sounds like they might not have used the BMW part.
Hmmm - wonder if the speed sensor could be causing the issues with traction control or antilock. I'll check it out.
Thanks again for all of the help! |
