I am looking at a 99 528i 5 speed that needs a new engine. The car is in good condition and he is asking $1,600. Does that seem like a fair price and also are there any caveats with replacing the engine. Ideas and input are greatly appreciated. |

You'd need to review the procedure in the E39 Bentley's manual to determine first-hand what's involved.
It is crucial to get a used engine from an E39 that is of the same vintage as your car, because of differing emission systems versus model years.
Check around for prices on used engines, as well as the labor cost to do the job. Then compare that total cost with the cost of a running car, comparable to this one in condition.
I doubt you'll save much on the deal. _________________

Just finished installing the engine this weekend, Yipeee!!. No leaks, noises or weird smells. It took a little longer than I planned but I had nothing better to do, ya right. Scored major points with the war deparment since it will be her car. The only issue now is the wipers, they have a mind of their own.
All in all I would do it again. |
