but haven't changed out the cables yet. i did dial them in last year when i did the rotors/brakes

I cut one side so I could spray it inside, now I'm grabbing what is left with vise grips.

Here is a pic of what is left on one side, arrow shows where I think it should come apart

And of the same end of a good cable.

Quincy,
Not sure why your pics aren't showing up, maybe comcast doesn't allow
displaying them on a remote site, some sites do that.

Here in the Pacific NW, we mostly have 0 rust on our E30s, I've
never seen those rusted like that.

I'd say soak it every day with Kroil until it loosens enough that
you can pull it out.

Dale

i sure wish our cables were hydraulic, took me a whilel to get it dialed in, and my cables are good...

When you get the cables out, I'd clean that rust off the underbody with a wire wheel, making sure to get off any loose paint or undercoat. Then paint any exposed areas with POR-15 before you install your new cables. Put some Lubro-Moly copper anti seize paste on the old cables where they fit into the holders. This should protect your car and keep the new cables working smoothly.

They failed because the rubber housing was cracked allowing water into the cable and then rust and corrosion. Also I think the rubber housing is essential for proper operation.

Wow John... VERY impressive! How did you lower that WHOLE subframe with the diff attached??? It must weigh a ton as a single unit!!!

I use a jack under the diff. It is heavy, but I can slide it around by myself, and pick it up with two people.

Easier than taking everything apart, IMHO.

Replacing some hard brake lines, hoses, and bushings before it goes back in...

**THAT** is dedication.
