I cut one side so I could spray it inside, now I'm grabbing what is left with vise grips.
Here is a pic of what is left on one side, arrow shows where I think it should come apart
And of the same end of a good cable.

When you get the cables out, I'd clean that rust off the underbody with a wire wheel, making sure to get off any loose paint or undercoat. Then paint any exposed areas with POR-15 before you install your new cables. Put some Lubro-Moly copper anti seize paste on the old cables where they fit into the holders. This should protect your car and keep the new cables working smoothly. _________________ Cirrusblau '88 325iC 5-speed

They failed because the rubber housing was cracked allowing water into the cable and then rust and corrosion. Also I think the rubber housing is essential for proper operation. _________________

Ok, I got them replaced....
Here is the part I had to remove to be able to drill them out.
Here is why I was replacing them... Old cable...
And the bit where I drilled it...

Wow John... VERY impressive! How did you lower that WHOLE subframe with the diff attached??? It must weigh a ton as a single unit!!! _________________ Cosmo - 1985 BMW 325e, Single Owner, 265,000+ ORIGINAL miles and still going strong! I use a jack under the diff. It is heavy, but I can slide it around by myself, and pick it up with two people.
Easier than taking everything apart, IMHO.
Replacing some hard brake lines, hoses, and bushings before it goes back in... _________________

**THAT** is dedication.
boy, you sure don't take anything back huh
instead of just putting it in park, you dismantle the whole car...
