on my e36 I was able to remove the thermostat and housing without removing the fan, but I believe I did need to remove the shroud.
I just did my wifes e39 cooling system, and unfortunately I cannot remember if you need to remove all those parts, I am thinking you may not have to remove it all, since there is more room.
but removing those parts only takes a few more minutes, to save you aggravation I would plan on removing it all. _________________ joe

John, you can remove the thermostat housing without removing the fan/shroud. A 3/8in drive 13mm socket and 1/4in drive 10mm (short and deep) socket will work. You'll need both hands for this and a lot of manual dexterity. |

About three months and 4500 miles ago I took my 1997 BMW 528I to a BMW dealer to be ... I payed 1500 to replace, thermostat, housing, water pump, checked all the ... This has been an engineering fault from bmw (in my opinion) on the e39.

The E39 cooling system weaknesses are legendary. One needs to accept the fact that these components must be changed periodically, just like tires and brakes.
Once you get to that point, you'll feel better about the car, and enjoy its many attributes.
Mike Miller, in Bimmer magazine, says that water pump, mechanical t'stat, fan and clutch, and t'stat housing (plastic, I assume) be changed every 60k; and radiator, exp tank, and pulleys every 90k. _________________

I've had 3 BMW's so far, replacing the cooling system on all 3 because the upper neck on the radiator broke on each. plastic necks??? come on engineers. . . _________________ joe
