I love my 2001 e38.
I just bought it with 78k on it from the second owner and all the records looked good.
After the first time I changed the oil which was dirty I noticed a knock a knock aknock from the middle of the engine.
i have scoped the alternator area and it seems to be valve train, like lifters.
It only does it at idle and my BMW tech said it is not the rods.
So I keep clean oil in it, semisyntheic 5-30 and it still knocks.
It runs like crazy.
Any ideas? |

Was this your first oil change? If so, perhaps the last owner ran heavier oil.
Many owners of the M62 engine complain about startup valve noise when using 5W30. You really should check the oil pressure when hot. Low limit is 7.4 psi at idle, and "regulated" pressure is 66.2.
I run Castrol GTX 20W50 dino oil, and have no valve train noise at any time, at 100k miles. _________________

Outstanding info.
I have always used castrol 20 w 50 until ai ran into my accura that the lifters required thinner oil. 5w30 does seem way to thin.
My car has the dinan chip in tranny and engine and it gets 26mpg on the hiway and wears tires out around town.
thanks for the oil info |
