Has anyone else had one of these cars go crazy??
Without warning the battery charge light came on, both the main headlamps blew (standard, not xenons), then the car went into 'limp mode'.
Over night it then flattened it's battery.
Superb!!
My friend at a local garage ran a diagnostic with a snap-on computer today(sorry i didnt catch the model of it) and it came up with "error 96 ECU power supply"
Shutting down and re-starting the car will clear 'limp mode', sometimes it will come back, sometimes you can drive for miles and its fine but the battery charge light remains on.
Does anyone have any bright ideas please??
It's a sad day in my driveway |

Hi All,
It is a happier day now in my driveway.
Just to let you all know that it was the alternator that blew - in a big way!
Having had a very clued electrics guy come and run some tests, then a genius mechanic friend let loose on the car it turns out that the following happened:
Alternator failed and overvolted the whole system
Head lights could not take this and blew immediatelty
Resultant power surge (then complete failure of power from alternator) caused transmission to go into 'limp mode' following this........
All other systems shut down in accordance to specification of the car as i carried on driving (and the voltage from the battery continued to drop)
Car now fixed - Job's a good un.
If you ever need to contact (who are in my humble opinion) the best BMW repair team in the south of Britain - i will gladly pass on their details.
Happy trails,
Tony |
