Should I remove it completely?
and then have the welder reinstall using all new hardware?
Or is it worth it taking it off, and risking fractures etc?

I had mine welded in place. It had a hole in the bottom. _________________ Bob

what were the results?
Was your noise level reduced significantly?

never heard any difference in noise. I didn't know it had a hole until the shop pointed it out.
it was a hole in the center bottom. It's held up ok. It's been a number of years since he welded it. _________________ Bob

Any time you seal a hole in the system, you quiet it down. The closer to the engine you are, the more sound you silence.
I have never had a problem with things fracturing, but I've always been very careful taking it out. Yo don't want it smashing into the ground etc., nor do you want it badly flexed, but the OEM cat's a pretty durable thing.
I got mine from Roadstergal (moderator) years ago... she sent it to me from Seattle, and it had been in her garage for a while. It made the trip nicely and replaced the third failed after-market cat I had in the car at the time.
Whether or not you have it removed to be welded all depends upon where the damage to the cat is. _________________ Cosmo - 1985 BMW 325e, Single Owner, 265,000+ ORIGINAL miles and still going strong! But now on the East Coast and the salt air corrosion is eating my beautiful car alive...
