My 2003, 325XI has developed a fuel smell in the passenger compartment when the vehicle is started in cold weather. This was not noticable until the current winter conditions we are having in the Maritimes. The dealer did not offer an explainatoion other than BMWs are known for this smell when starting in cold weather. We purchased the car in June and this is our first winter with it.
Is the dealer correct or is there something more serious taking place?
Thanks for your help. |

I've never had a car with a fuel smell that was "normal." Smelling fuel is an indication of a leak somewhere.
It's possible that the fuel pump seal at the gas tank is shrinking in the cold, and allowing fuel vapors to escape.
If the dealer cannot diagnose the problem, then you must find a well-regarded independent BMW shop to troubleshoot the problem. _________________
