Easy job to do. First go to a breakers and buy the indicator stalk with a button on the end (that button enables you to cycle through the OBC functions.) New price from BMW is about £90. I got one for £15 plus VAT.
Secondly, check under the left front of the car in front of the wheel and see if the outside temperature probe is fitted (looks like a short black rod about 2 inches long sitting in a cutout in the plastic valance.) Temperature probe is not essential, the other OBC functions will work without it.
Disconnect the car battery and wait 5 minutes (this will ensure the airbags are de-armed.)
Remove the Airbag from the steering wheel (TorX screws, they will be tight) and disconnect the airbag wires.
Unscrew steering wheel securing nut but do not completely remove it.
Pull on steering wheel to release it from the splines, if it is tight and releases suddenly, the nut will prevent the wheel from flying off and injuring you.
When the wheel is loose, remove nut and wheel. There are alignment marks on the end of the steering column to assist in refitting the wheel in the correct position.
Remove the trim from around the column switches (a few screws.)
Remove the indicator switch, 2 screws and then it slides towards the rear of the car (which is why the steering wheel had to come off.)
Disconnect indicator switch multiplug.
Reverse procedure, using new switch.
I went to AutoTechnic, (a company owned by Snows BMW), which specialise in slightly older BMW's.
Half an hour on their magic computer at a cost of £30 told the car it now has an OBC. All functions work. Total cost under £50. _________________ |
