Suddenly my steering is very hard (like no power assist). I don't have anything leaking from the steering rack and the fluid level is good so I am thinking its the steering knuckle binding up.
I have yet to get to it but plan to this weekend and I am seeking any advice on this if there is anything I need to be aware of before attempting it.

Thanks in advance.

Vin

I would suspect the pump failed or belt is loose if the hard steering is a constant feel through out its range. if its binding then loose (or inconsistent) then its probably the rack.

I have had no noise what so ever though.
This happened rather suddenly too.

I was just assuming that if I had not squealing from the belt or grinding from the pump it must be the knuckle. One obvious thing I have yet to look at is the belt. The fluid is at the proper level as well.

When you say knuckle, do you mean the universal joints on the column?
If so, I doubt they would cause your condition.

If the steering is hard through out its range (lock to lock) I would look at the pump. (or some other problem that is not alowing fluid pressure to the rack)
clogged lines, pinched hose etc.
If its jerky or hard at some spots then it's probably the steering rack.

Yes its hard from lock to lock like I have no PS at all so I will look into the belt/ pump/ hose

You can easily tell if the problem is in the boost system or binding parts by getting both front wheels of the ground and going from lock to lock with the engine off. If that is stiff, something is binding. If not, you aren't getting boost for some reason

ah hem well what if some buffoon (namely me) posted a dumb question on this forum before verifying that the belt actually came off of the power steering pump.
Embarassed

Well it should be an easy fix at least. Laughing
