Has anyone heard of problems with the ZF 5HP-19EH Transmission for a 2000 323i. I have 135,000 km on my bmw and the reverse gear stopped working this week. My dealer says the whole trans. needs replacing at over $5000.00. I have always had regular maintenance and the car is in great shape. I am trying to fight bmw canada on this issue. |

My friend owns the same type of car and the year. At about 95k miles his transmission developed the same problem, goes forward but not reverse. Reassembly of the trany cost him about $3500 at the independent BMW shop. After the repair a mechanic at the shop showed him the reverse gear with all teeth missing. He also added that the car is good but s does happen. |

I discovered the same problem with my 2000 323i last Friday. I am the original owner and the vehicle has only 40,000 miles. I have heard of many others with this problem, though most had more miles than I. We have contact BMW North America and they simply referred us to the Service Manager at the local dealership. However, I heard from an independent BMW repair shop that other owners have convinced BMW North America to pay for out of warrant repair of this problem. I am interested in any information you or others may be able to offer about similar experiences with the reverse failing on 2000 323i transmissions. Although BMW has not been responsive to individuals, they may be responsive to a group. |

Is "2000" the year of problem for the auto trans? You 2000 owners should band together and work together to get compensated. _________________ Don |

I had the same problem with my 323i wagon; the transmission (reverse) failed at 50K miles. Fortunately, the $5K replacement was covered under warranty. The mechanic at Brecht BMW San Diego explained that BMW is aware that defective transmissions were used in some 2000 models - apparently, all the defective transmissions came from the same supplier from eastern europe. |
