I am at my wits end. I have tried new spark plugs, changing the idle, cleaning the engine with carb cleaner, reattaching wires, etc. Nothing works. When just putting car in drive, reverse or just stopping at a light, the RPM's jump up and down, and the car either stalls or acts like it will stall. Anyone have a suggestion? I can't afford to have it serviced right now and need advice.

Hey,

Read the following and see if it describes the problem. This is for a 3-series but I think the theory is pretty much the same. Let me know if this helps.

Hesitation post from the past

if you haven't already found the problem,I think you have a vacuum leak or even several.
Check all vacuum lines and hoses around intake manifold area.
