My recently purchased '94 740il 118k miles, is showing around 5500rpm on the highway. I'm not stupid and know damn well that big ole 8 is only turning maybe 2k on the highway. Anyone know a possible remedy for this ailment?? Maybe reset the computer somehow? Also, can't find out where the pollen filter is at, any ideas or at least a general location? Thanks everyone!

Hello, checked a ground, not the problem. Did the gauge test by holding the check computer button in with the ignition to pos.2, all gauges went up and down, lights came on, butttttt, the speedo went to 75mph and tack went to about 4100. I heard speedo is supposed to go to 120mph and tack to around 3000rpm. Any other ideas as to why this happens. Perhaps a faulty engine speed sensor. Note: the engine starts and runs fine- I'm assuming if the sensor was bad, the motor wouldn't run at all? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing, does anyone know if the rear strut mounts go bad after say 120k miles. My struts ride up and down about an inch and clunk over the bumps. Replaced the bombs, no difference. New mounts are on the way, hope that works. I don't think the strut is supposed to move at all. Is that correct???

I agree. Struts are mounted solidly to the chassis, and to the suspension. Only thing that should move is the shock piston.

Re tach, does the speedo agree with the OBC average speed readout when using cruise control?

If so, you may have to pull the instrument cluster and poke about in there.

The filter is under a "D" shaped panel, which appears to be under the hood. There is a screw on the curved portion of the "D" that holds the panel in place.
