I have a 2000 BMW 323i. I recently went to a stereo installer to purchase an Alpine DVD navigation system. They informed me that they will not touch 2000 BMW's because of the fact that there are a half dozen or so computers in the car that communicate through a binary, multiplex, fiber optic cable. One of these computers is in the stereo head unit (for the alarm), and removing this equipment, causes the main computer to generate fault codes. They also mentioned that when they removed the head unit in another car, they burned out one of the computers and ended up with a $10,000 repair bill from BMW. Is this true? Has anybody successfully installed a new head unit in a 2000 BMW. |
