If you go to some of the more performace oriented BMW boards you will find that stock cars are routinely (daily) taken to the rev limiter. With that many miles on it, I think I would work up to it slowly. Not sure exactly where your rev limiter cuts in, if you look on your tach, the red area has 2 segments, the limiter normally cuts in somewhere in the first segment. Hope this helps.

Rev limiter? Do I have one one those?
lol, I know what it is, but I dont think my 316 has one. I red lined it every day and took it to around 6500rpms sometimes.
The most its ever been to was right off the scale. The needle had gone past the last mark and was pointing straight down, thats when I noticed and backed off!!
I wouldnt suggest redlining your car all the time, but a good blast here and there wont do any harm. The rev limiter is there to stop you going into the danger zone.
Anyways, my beloved E30 316 is dead now and no the engine didnt die, lol. It was smashed into by an under cover traffic cop, he totaled my car!
So I have an 1991 520i but its sucks to drive compared to the E30.
Sorry, this is a bit long, I'm just bored and your post reminded me of the time I revved off the counter, lol. Wont be trying that again.
