You didn't say what year so I am responding with the only model I know...1986 325e 2.7
It probably depends on how far you moved the belt pulley. If it is only a matter of a couple of degrees, you should be able to re-align the timing marks for the cam sprocket and the drive shaft pulley without concern. If you moved it a lot(like you cranked the engine) you will have to pull the head and replace the head, or do a valve job because you probably bent a few valves. I doubt seriously if you moved it that much without cranking the engine, because if the cam or crankshaft rotates too much you will eventually have a valve and a piston trying to share the same space and the rotation would have stopped immediately.
The camshaft timing belt sprocket has an arrow on the face that should be lined up with a hash-mark on the front of the cylinder head. The crankshaft pulley has two hash-marks on it. One marked T and one marked Z. I have lined up mine with the T under the timing sensor at the direction of a local mechanic and it works beautifully.
If you do not want to try and line up the pulley timing marks, you can take off the vibration damper, the pulley and remove the lower timing belt cover. The lower timing belt gear has but one mark on it and you should line it up with the mark on the block.
I hope this helps. If you would like you can email me at ptrau@sportzter.com. I AM NOT A PRO...I JUST KNOW THIS ENGINE FROM EXPERIENCE.
