I might be wrong, but I believe that there is a power depletion threshold at which a battery can no longer be jump started.

In other words it may be too dead to be jumped.

can someone else confirm or deny that?

Yep. Replace the battery. Costco has their model 12, which fits E30's and has the hold downs on the end as well as the side, for $52.

Walmart has a battery that fits as well for just under $60.00 less core I believe. That's the one I have it fits no problem.

m78, it is very likely that your battery has a bad cell. This can happen when the battery gets too low for too long. It can also be a defective battery. If the battery has a cell that is shorted, it will not jump start because the current from the jumper cables goes through the shorted cell rather than the starter. Current always takes the path of least resistance. I would put money on it that if you took your battery to AutoZone, O'Reilly's, Pep Boys, or some other place that has a battery tester it would fail with a bad cell. Replace the battery and I'll bet you will be fine. Unless my battery goes down because I left the lights on (doh!), I replace it as soon as it lets me down the first time, or when I notice that it doesn't spin the motor quite as fast when starting. Its cheaper to replace the battery, even if the "life" hasn't technically expired than to be stranded. It amazes me that we replace timing belts, water pumps, brakes, hoses, fluids, and the like before they fail but wait until we have to have our car jump started several times before replacing the battery! I say we because I have done that myself.

I agree completely. That's the advantage to owning a diehard. Free replacements...no questions asked.

But actually it's menuhin that has the bad battery. Not me.

I agree totally! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed
I can now start my car and take it for a ride: after jlevie's suggestion of running the donor engine / charger 10+ minutes over the cable before starting it the first time
Yesterday, the battery went from 11.4 V to 11.8 V. This morning, after taking it for another ride, it came up to 12.1 V: so the alternator is working too...
Yet, I still have to test the voltage reading in 2000rpm for how effective the alternator is charging the battery
