Last weekend was the first NASA race weekend
with the spec E30 class added to the roster on the west coast. (Un)
fortunately,(only) one car showed up to represent the class - me!
And this was my first race. And this was the first time I've had
this car on this track (drove it twice, though, in my old 540). And
I ended up having to run **very** used 225 RA-1's on the rear after
one of my fronts started to cord during qualifying (tire shop had no
205's, new or used, but had two 225's in their junk pile). Anyone
who had seen these 225's would not have protested, trust me!
Alright, now that I have my excuses in order... I'm going on memory,
but if it serves on Saturday I started 52nd out of the 62 cars in
group D and finished around 37th. On Sunday I started 50th and finished
42nd. Great? Well, not really. Dominant? Hardly. But I was pretty darn
satisfied to have survived in that large of a field & pick up some
positions in both races! Had some great back & forth battles with
some spec miatas & spec 944's on both days. These truly are competitive with most cars in the field. I couldn't believe how
your adrenelin gets going when you're chasing someone - in Sunday's
race my fastest lap was over 2 seconds faster than my qualifying time
on either day! This while trying to catch the 944 in front of me &
outrun the 944 behind me. Didn't work, as I ended up overheating the
tires & lost both of them.
This weekend was almost without question the absolute most fun I've
ever had in my life. Hopefully we'll get some more spec e30's out
here soon, which would only make it better. Anyone sitting on the fence, here's my recommendation to come-on over. Plus it's not quite as
impressive to tell people you won a race in which you were the only
entrant!!
