can anyone give me the lowdown on R&R the alternator bushings on my 1986 E30 (325)? It was recommended to me a few months ago because of the belt noise, and now that it's warm enough I want to do it. |

If I remember correctly, it has been a couple years. Remove the alternator from the car. Remove the pulley. Remove the Voltage Regulator/brush assembly. Remove the through bolts and split the case. In the front half is a bearing that must be pressed in and out, the rear half has a bushing, pull/scrape out and press in. As I remember by the time I bought the new brush assy (if yours is original you will need one) and spent most of the day on the car I would have been ahead just buying a rebuilt alternator. If you don't have a Bentley's may want to pick one up before you start. it is a very good reference book. |
