I had a 1990 325i that was smashed in the rear
Before I sold it off I switched the idle valve and dme just to be sure.
This problem started to worsen just a couple of weeks ago. When it started being cold and moist in the mornings. temperature may be a key.
As for the spacer, I took it out because I couldn't force it back in and I was looking at some sort of vacuum leak, the valve cover gasket wasn't sealing plus a big oily mess, because of the spacer causing problems.
Compression test was 12 bar across the board that is 170 psi or alot better than I expected. _________________ 5 e30's 84, 87, 3 90's

Since last update;
I have replaced both the ICV and the DME.
The ICV changed the overall responce that I was getting. Instead of going into a low rpm 500-600 rpm chokie type idle, remember I'm getting 4.5 volts on one side of my IVC. Now I have a 1500-1800 rpm clean idle.
IVC is now open still have 4.5 volts on one side of ICV.
Next I replaced the DME with a 1989 200-173 motronic unit former unit was a 200-380 these are supposed to be compatable. Anyway now I get a 1500rpm lopeing idle that lopes between 1000 and 1500 same 4.5 volts on the one ICV terminal.
I'm still somewhat confused. _________________ 5 e30's 84, 87, 3 90's

I removed and restored the head, in the process I discovered the oil return tube was beaten up and shortened. After I replaced this the engine vacuum pressure returned to normal. Now when I remove the oil fill the idle gets funky, previously no change. So it was a vacuum leak, I submit. _________________ 5 e30's 84, 87, 3 90's

For those that may follow, he may be talking about the Rocker Arm Shaft Retaining pin. As another mentioned, it prevents the rocker arm shafts from rotating. The rocker arm shafts have oil holes in them, and the shafts turn they won't get oil inside of them. This will cause oil starvation will occur and you'll lose the head.
I had a local performance shop fail to put this in and at the time I didn't know enough to check. The brand new $2000 Metric Mechanic head failed catastrophically 2hrs 45min later in a 3hr race. That was fairly unhappy. _________________ NASA SpecE30
