yeah, well unfortunately I cannot get access to the other side of that panel.
I think a body shop is going to have to remove the lock.
Do you know what that covering is supposed to look like that is all corroded and deteriorated in my back seat. I'd like to get that replaced as well.

You don't need access from the other side... Whack that panel by one of the cutouts and it'll break the tab. The problem you'll have is that the fiberboard thing is on the other side, and that'll get trashed as you knock the panel in. Take a hammer, and hit it 1/2" from the dot to the inside of the knockout panel, and the tab will break. Do it to a whole side of the panel and you should be able to pull the panel out and the rest of the tabs will break. When I first did it, I was very nervous... Dale said "Just whack it... it'll break." He was correct!
I don't have pictures of that other section. The plastic pipe there goes the engine compartment as it's the vapor return line for the gas tank. Not sure what the braided hose is. I'm sorry but I don't have any pictures of that section of the car where the corrosion is. _________________ Cosmo - 1985 BMW 325e, Single Owner, 265,000+ ORIGINAL miles and still going strong! I also had my 1990 i rear ended, some what worse than yours.
My trunk frame was pushed in.
Anyway, sounds crude I know, but I was able to gain access with a large crowbar. and after I found a large tree and a come-along, to strighten the frame damage to the point that I could shut the trunk.
I don't preach this, it's just what I was able to do.
I can tell you I was very upset, march madness a couple of years back. _________________ 5 e30's 84, 87, 3 90's

yeah, I was considering the crowbar routine.
unfortunately I may have to resort to cutting.
I'd like to preserve the lock if possible. it should still work I think.

Also, smithpatrick
did your oil pan get cracked as a result of the rear end wreck?

the body shop was able to get the trunk open by using herculean hammer blows with a rubber mallet to the trunk button.
Wish I'd have thought of that.
Anyway, it's still deformed enough that it won't acutate the trunk light off.
So I removed the trunk light for now.
Bought a used trunk lid and the body shop will be painting next week.
SLOOOOOOWWW progress. But at least now drivable (on only sunny days however).
Any advice from anyone of re-installing trunk lid? I already know not to try latching until it's all been adjusted.

I would remove the latch mechanism from the lid before you try to install it, so there's no chance it'll lock shut. Then, once it's aligneg, put that catch back in and adjust the lock stuff... _________________ Cosmo - 1985 BMW 325e, Single Owner, 265,000+ ORIGINAL miles and still going strong! few years back i had same bad luck on a white ic.
the ins totaled the car of course, and offered - incredible - 7000.-- for the wreck that i could keep! i guess they must have had a drunk adjuster who recorded 1989 as 1998.
i cut off the entire rear end, asked eurosports to cut same out of one of their junkers, cost 220.- plus bodywork. i could never tell the difference! |

Another 'hit from behind' story --
Not an E30, but an E10 (1972 2002). Five times!
I figured it was the dim (nearly invisible) rear lights, so I did something about it, and stopped getting rear ended imediately!
1) Added a Hella 'universal rear fog' light on top of the trunk lid, wired it to the left side brake light;
2) Adapted a dual filament bulb to the brake socket, so I had two tail light bulbs behind each lens instead of stock one bulb;
3) Added another dual filament auxiliary tail light (tail, brake) next to the stock lights, adding a third tail and second brake light each side.
Yes, it looked a little 'Joe McGhee' and yes, it halted the rear assault cold!
Fast forward, I got hold of an E30 rear light, discovered how to double the tail and brake light output and size of lighted lens areas, easily!
Ask me how, maybe it will help you avoid similar headaches by keeping your baby freom being hit from behind!
I'd love to help you, and will- if you think it's a good idea (I certainly do). _________________ Andy, the tail light guy: "Be Seen, and Not Hurt!"
