|
|
Need some help. BavAuto sells a shifter rebuild kit for $129 that seems to include all that I need, and more. But the product description says "for 325es Thru 4/1986 Production."
My VIN tells me my car was built in 6/1986.
The BavAuto part # is: SRK E30 325E E
Any difference?

Call them, they would know for sure.
You may want to consider putting your own kit together and use an E36 shifter for a little shorter throw.
I did when I rebuilt mine this spring. Probably came to about the same price as their kit.
I don't think you need the long shaft either. They are usually fine. _________________ Bob

Thanks. I have a call into them, but they shut down on Friday mornings, so I thought I'd go to the experts!
The shaft is probably OK but Spending $129 replacing the entire assembly is still way better than having a car payment. It's the "soft" parts that are shot and the circlip is missing. (Actually I found it in my driveway, 30 miles from where the whole thing let loose. Anazing it held together that long!) _________________ Craig

I think there were some shifter parts that were different for earlier E30s. That kit may reflect those parts. See if there is a kit for a later car. Or you can check RealOEM.com. |

Sometimes you can use parts for 199x e36's as well. Talk to Alan if you can. _________________ 1984 325e 5-speed coupe

Dale helped me with selecting the z3 1.9 shifter.
its shorter throw is great.
advsing to remove the harmonic balancer on the driveline, to prevent you from needing to bend the selector rod....
did my vert years ago, and its still the best. _________________ .......... |

Installed yesterday and even though I did not purchase the short shifter kit, it sure seems like it to me. What a nice upgrade/fix! _________________ Craig

That's great. Which kit worked for your car?
I remember when I redid mine a few years ago. It made driving more enjoyable by not having that sloppy, worn-out shifter. |

Funny, I'd had the car for so many years (original owner), that I was used to the shift being loose. I guess it just developed over a long period of time. After I was done with most of my restoration, I took it back to the mechanic that had been charging me through the teeth when I first moved here, and let him look at the car... I told him to take a small test drive to see what he thought.
When he came back, he said "It's great... everything's so tight... all you need now is to tighten up that shift!" He told me it was REALLY loose and worn... heck, I didn't know... I just drove it for 24 years and everything seemed right!
I got all of the parts, and rebuilt the shifter. When I took it for a test drive, It didn't seem like I was actually getting into gear, cause the lever was moving so little. Boy, I got used to THAT fast... what a difference! It's amazing how we cna get used to things if they develop slowly enough! _________________ Cosmo - 1985 BMW 325e, Single Owner, 265,000+ ORIGINAL miles and still going strong!
