stupidly, I did not replace the starter last year when I did the clutch job. Now, the pinion gear is failing and need to replace. How much of a chore is it? I read in an article in the Pelicanparts site that the intake manifold has to be out. However, looking at the TIS, that is not the case, just removing the cabin air intake should be enough.

My car has the starter version with threaded holes.

Any previous experience will be appreciated.

Just for the 300+ people that looked at this post w/o one comment, here it is:
my car has a 5 speed manual tranny and the type of starter with threaded attachment holes.

So it was a matter of a couple of hours to take the two Torx head M10 bolts from behind the tranny using two 12" socket extensions and a few other things (cross car lower brace, disconnect battery, disconnect the electrical terminals from the starter, etc). Bought a re-manufactured Bosch starter and in another hour the car was running.

I would not say that was an easy job, but anyone with some exposure to mechanics should be able to do.

I do not have any idea how difficult will be for an auto transmission.

I once had to pull the tranny in my e30. The starting motor had to come out. It was a royal pain. I get the idea the e36 is worse. I'm hoping the starting motor and heater core last untill I no longer own this car.
