|
|
Hi:
It seems a vacuum leak, but before I start digging into it, I would like to consult the expertise of this forum. The sound is like that of a low horn or trumpet, it is not related to engine speed, and stays on a second or two after the engine shuts off, like exhausting the vacuum. It seems to come from the intake side, but it is crowded there.
Any ideas?
Thanks _________________

Put your hand over the oil fill hole while the engine is running. If it REALLY sucks on your hand, the crankcase vent valve has died.
You may be hearing the noise of air rushing past the crankshaft seals. _________________

Ed Jack:
I suspected that and yesterday night I did put my hand over the oil filler. The vacuum is not like putting your hand on top of a carburator and choking a running engine, but it is not negligible. Furthermore, the sound becomes louder with the oil cap removed.
Should I order a new CCV valve or is it there something that can be repaired?
Thanks for your help.

I don't know of anything else that would cause this. _________________

The engine is under pressure now. Could it be that the CCV valve is clogged now? The engine is not new (253000 miles) but runs strong. I thought that BMW engines were supposed to have a slight vacuum to prevent leaks. Now the engine is leaking oil into the sparkplug tubes. _________________
