Hey,
I have a '97 528i 5spd blk that I love, but it is hell to get inspected because the ck engine lite comes on and off. 182k.
I have had the codes scanned and it ususally does it driving around in town. the codes are: 229 ox sensor, control freq, 233 ctalyst eff bank 1, 227 mixture deviattion cyl 1 2 3, 228 same cyl 456,
the car starts and runs fine, my daughter drives it now{ I drive e38} and the only way to get it inspected, is clear codes, drive 1hr.
HELP!! please

Sounds like your O2 sensors need replacement, especially at this mileage; they're only warranted for 100k. I'd replace all 4 and see what happens. Cheaper than replacing the cats.

In any event, a car s/b driven for 10-15 min at freeway speeds just prior to the smog test, so that everything is at operating temp.

BTW, I'm surprised you can pass the test after just having cleared the codes. You must not have IM 240 in TX.
