Hey guys, looking for some advice on my broken radiator neck. I've read some earlier post on this topic but hoping my ///M buddies here can help me best. I have a 98' ///M3 with just 80K on it now. Driving tonight the car started smoking. Pulled over and found I couldn't refasten the clamp b/c the plastic was broke off in the hose (top of radiator). I'm not super mechanically inclined but can handle this I think with some help. In prior threads I found that guys replaced many parts along the way with this type of problem b/c they said "well, i figured once i was in there i thought i should just replace all this other stuff". I'm sure that's not a bad idea but I'm talking budget for the next month starting a new business. Two months down the line from now I may be able to do the entire job of replacing most all these internal other items but for now.....Can I get away with just replacing the radiator???? Or is there really more to it that I just have to do? Also, is anyone out there willing to give me advice and help me out along the way? Thanks guys! |

At minimum, replace the rad and exp tank. At your leisure, replace the water pump and thermostat housing. There is a high-performance pump for the six. Highly recommended.
Drain the block, and replace the coolant with BMW stuff, mixed 50-50 with distilled water. Note that the six is very difficult to purge out the air. Search this site for bleeding procedure. It's necessary to elevate the front of the car as high as you can during the procedure.
Hope you didn't trash the engine. The six is very sensitive to overheating.
Get this manual: http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=be36. It covers the M3 engine; you're very lucky, there is no available documentation on other M-cars. _________________
