Hey.

I'm planing to go to Ottawa for newyears, just for fun, driving through the country and so. An I got this crazy idea, what if I buy myself one those Ladas and bring it back to US.

Checked car importation rules, not so good. Turns out if the car is newer than 25 years, I got to have letter from manufacturer stating that it comlies to US safety standards, emission paperwork, ect... Seems to be impossible to do myself, unless I use some licensed importer, but that's extra $$$,. Cannot get an old car as well, because Lada's vere imported to Canada from 1990, I'll have to wait few years untill they are old enough %))))

Then I got another idea. When a Canadian citizen drives into US, on a personal vehicle, they are not importing it, so no paperwork needed, right?... So., I buy this canadian vehicle and hassle with local DMV to get it registered. Minnesota is not at all harsh with motor vehicle rules,..

Has anyone driven to US from Canada with their own car? You don't have to have DOT and such paperwork with it do you?
I'll not need anything like that to cross into Canada for a while... Is it the same the other way?

I see some cars with Canadian plates once in a while, just wounering if that's something to think about.
Smile

Well, no one responded, strange... I expected to hear at least some negative comments %)

I think I'll pass with that thing. I've done some research, and found out MN DMV will ask for importation papers right away when I try to register. So even if I bring it I'll be unable to get it titled.

there is one for sale in Canada on ebay right now, and some dude who is bidding on it planing to drive it acros the border into US... I wounder how he is planning to do that Rolling Eyes Perhaps there are ways to get around it, however from what I've learned so far it's dead end idea.

Well. I'll just enjoy myself in Canada then,.. Sitting in Ottawa bar on dec 31 %) I can legally drink there, Hurray!. Cool

OK...here's a few comments.

1. Why buy a Lada when you might get a Yugo for free! Can anyone really tell the difference? Or for that matter get yourself a Fiat. It will be in the garage so frequently you'll never have to register the thing. Or for that matter you wouldn't have to register any of those vehicles since they'd probably never last more then 15 miles of driving per year.

2. Why no one replies... who in their right mind would chime in on improperly bringing anything cross any border? You gotta be nuts
to even think about that kind of wachadoodle idea.
