I have a 2001 M roadster with a broken driver side door lock. When I put the key in, something fell down inside the door panel. Its not the servo becuse the lock works from the trunk and the passenger door. Question: How difficult is it to remove the door panel? Is there a concern with the air bag?
Any input would be helpful.

I've seen photos of the E39 with the inside door panel removed. The air bag remains inside the door.
Look for retaining screws in the recess for the inside door handle, under the cover; and inside the air vent where it passes through the front of the door; and the arm rest.
Otherwise, the panel is held on via snaps all around the sides and bottom. It's lifted off the top of the door. You can buy a low cost pry bar to pop the panel snaps at your local auto parts store.
Do not tear the plastic liner, nor discard it. It keeps water out of the interior of the car. Be sure to replace it when you're finished. Make sure it is properly sticking to the door. _________________
