I have had some folks ask me what it takes to get started racing.
I'll writeup an outline here of my suggested approach based on my experience with the Pro3 class here in the North West.
The basic ideas apply anywhere, but you'll have to research some of the specific information yourself if you are located in a different part of the country. See http://www.bmwcca.org for info on joining and your local chapter. Consider SCCA, BMWCCA Club Racing as well.
A) take a novice skills day with your local BMWCCA Chapter, this prepares you for the basics of car control

B) take a novice driver education day at the track with your local BMWCCA Chapter, puts together all the car control elements you learned at the novice skills day, and in a track setting

C) attend several high performance driving days with your local BMWCCA Chapter or other local club or organization to master pushing your street car to it's limits

D) attend an ICSCC or SCCA sanctioned novice racing school. In ICSCC, each member chapter puts these on, and many schools across the country put these on as well. You can normally drive your street car for one of these.

At Pacific Raceways in Kent, WA:

At Portland International Raceway in Portland, OR

At Mission Raceway in Mission, British Columbia

E) read the rules, 2005 ICSCC Pro3 rules and SCCA IT rules are found at these links:

F) build or rent a race car, if building, get it teched before the race weekend to have time to fix anything found wrong
See this post for more on building a Pro3 car:

G) buy or rent your safety gear, 2005 SA helmet, 3layer Nomex
suit, gloves, boots, underwear, head sock
H) sign up for your first novice race
http://www.icscc.com/schedule.html
forms are here:
http://www.icscc.com/forms.html
I) show up and have a great time running your first novice race!
J) After 3 novice races, if you do well, you'll be granted an "Area" license, which allows you to drive in the Senior races with the experienced drivers.
K) Many drivers will continue to do novice races on a Saturday, and run a Senior race on that Sunday, 2 races in 1 weekend, is a great bang-for-the-buck. At this point, lots of seat time is key to very important to improving your skillset. _________________ http://www.unofficialbmw.com
