currently idles at 1500 rpm, can not adjust lower. intermitantly idles from 800 to 1400 rpm when stopped sometimes. can sometimes smell rich mixture from exhaust and can hear fuel pump rev up and down while driving at times. Any ideas

First, have you ever changed your O2 sensor? If not, replace it. Second, how is your air flow sensor? (Attached to the air filter housing.) Remove it from the housing and look inside it. Does the metal vane inside move freely? If not, replace the unit. Third thing to check is the idle stabilizer valve, silver cylinder located above the intake. Clamp off the tube running from the valve and see if that helps. If it does, that may be the culprit. But... Start with the O2 Sensor.

thanks Scott, I'll try that. I read somewhere that an o2 senser from a ford mustang can be used. Do you know anyone that's tried it?

No, I don't know anyone that has. Your best bet is to buy an O2 sensor from someone that can provide you with the right part. I think that www.bmpd.com has the lowest prices on O2 sensors.
