I've got to swallow my pride, and ask a very straighforward question...Where is the oil filter on my 1993 740i?
Yes, I would rather ask complete strangers, rather than ask a mechanic face-to-face.
Thanks! |

Well, if you haven't found it yet, it should be on the left side wheel well. It's an aluminum cannister with a large black plastic cap. Remove the cap with a 36 mm socket, and hold the cannister while opening and closing it, to reduce load on the rubber mounts.
When you change the oil, drain the cannister by backing out the cap until it is free, and pull it up slightly. The filter cartridge snaps into the top of the cap. The filter kit includes a new O-ring and drain plug washer. |

Thanks!
I'll look around as soon as I get a chance. We're in the middle of a long streak of sub-zero weather...And me without a garage! |

Got your private message.
The filter support only needs changing when it breaks. Apparently, the first time a filter is inserted (at the factory?) is the only time the support needs to be installed. Otherwise, you just use the support that is already in the filter housing.
Be sure and lube the new O-ring with motor oil after you have seated it in the cap, and before you screw it home. Make sure the cap is fully screwed in. |
