i'm trying to find some info on the v12 engines used on the 7 and 8 series. is it true that the later models came with 48-valve dohc cylinder heads rather than 24-valve sohc?

Never heard of a 48-valve BMW V12.

Take a look at www.E31.net
It's quite an interesting site, but doesn't mention a 48 valve engine.
