I agree with Jeff. If your engine still has the hex head bolts, they are failure prone. Get rid of them. Seems the hex bolt heads have a tendency to pop off. Best case is a blown head gasget. Worst case is many 528e owners must replace the head assembly after a hex bolt head pops off and gets lodged under a cam lobe and mashed into the water jacket destroying the head and subjecting the timing belt to severe stretching trauma.
For ~$30 you can purchase a torx head bolt kit (14 bolts) from your local BMW dealership. Check the earlier bulletin board postings as several owners have reportedly installed the torx head bolts without removing the head. If you elect to replace the hex bolts this way, REPLACE AND FINAL TORQUE ONE TORX BOLT AT A TIME using the maintenance manual head bolt torque + degree procedure and criss-cross pattern. Remember, the torx bolts are torque-to-yield. Once torqued (stretched) they cannot be reused.
If your engine already has the torx head bolts installed, my years of experience tells me to leave well enough alone.
Good Luck
