with club discount it's $1,600.xx at stealer.
eeuro-parts have a bosal for $514.xx

Yep, they're VERY expensive... But, they last forever, and the 3rd party ones don't. After mine finally fell apart, with no place to have it welded, I bought one from BavAuto... Lasted 3 years or so... Then bought another, not sure from where... 3 years... Then bought a USED OEM cat from RoadsterGal, and that puppy's still on the car, working great... 7 years so far.
What's wrong with your existing cat? Does it have holes??? Are the shields loose? _________________ Cosmo - 1985 BMW 325e, Single Owner, 231,000+ ORIGINAL miles and still going strong!

Wow.
They want more for the converter than I paid for either of the BMWs I've owned.
Dang.
In fact, it's not too much less than the cost of both my cars together.
Depressing.
For the cost of a new $1600 unit you could pick up a parts car with a good converter and maybe even make a buck reselling it after you pull it off! _________________ 1992 Plymouth Sundance Duster -- 263,000 miles -- RIP due to rust;

well, the current one (original) has at least one hole. I spoke with a muffler shop (very reputable) and they estimated $250 to weld and repair. The hole is at the bend.
Or $150 to install a new one.
So I think I'm going to look again for myself and then get further advice from a shop I go to on occasion that specializes in bimmers. They told me before that replacement should be my last option. That getting someone to weld my current (original) cat is the preferred option, which is the way I am leaning. they also said that the original cat can last for quite a long time.
what has been other's experiences with welding their original cat?
And in addition what can I do to prolong the lifespan of the original? I change oil regularly (of course) and keep the plugs changed as well but I do have oil leaks and I fear they are shortening the life of the cat.
