20W50 is getting harder and harder to find. Can someone recommend a workable alternative? _________________ 1984 325e 5-speed coupe

Possibly, but this car has burned oil since it was new. 20W50 is pretty thick stuff. I'm hesitant to use something thinner. _________________ 1984 325e 5-speed coupe

My car uses oil too, and it uses the same amount regardless of 15w40 or 20w50.
Straight 30 weight oil is thinner than all of them at operating temperature. Not sure I would go there. |

i don't aggree (albeit without any knowledge of what brand were talking about here)
when i had a 81 datsun, i encountered piston slap.
started using 20-50 and slap would quiet down at startup, but get louder after it was warm.
then, with straight 30w, it would stay quiet all the time (for about a month or 2 ) _________________

I'm using the only 20W50 I can find here (for a reasonable price). Usually Valvoline, or Mag 1 (sold at a local farm store). I have used Wally's brand in the past but I rarely shop at that dump.
Most auto parts stores like Autozone and O'Reilly overcharge for their oil and other shelf products IMO. $4+ for a quart? Insane. _________________ 1984 325e 5-speed coupe

| Don't know if this is cheap enough for you, but AutoZone has Valvoline VR1 conventional 20W50 on sale for $3.29 per quart until the end of May. That is typically the oil I use in my car. |

FYI I own four vehicles. Three of them I will buy parts for from local parts stores such as Autozone/NAPA, but not the BMW unless it's really common and definitely not a load bearing part.
I've simply had too many of their parts fail immediately after installation. Such as a NAPA guibo. That one pi**ed me off.
I pretty much swear by BavAuto. But I'm no wrench. The control arms and other front suspension parts I just put in were installed by the 19-year old kid next door, who's A. A good mechanic and B. Needed the money. _________________ 1984 325e 5-speed coupe
