wife was driving to work and called me, she was on the side of the road, overheated and alternator light was on. so I knew the belts were off at a minimum

got the car home, tore it down and I needed 2 belts, water pump (the belts got wrapped around the water pump pulley and loosened the shaft. The pulley on the alternator tensioner was grooved so that needed to be replaced as well.

so I head to BMW to pickup the parts, they have the water pump, belts, but they no longer carry mechanical tensioners. apparently they switched to hydraulic tensioners to eliminate squealing, which sounds like a good idea, until they told me it would cost about $300 to make the conversion.

so I left and bought a new mechanical tensioner off eBay. $70 delivered overnight.

so I think everyone with a e39 should buy a spare mechanical tensioner if you don't want to make the conversion

I still have the old one when I replaced the existing one with one from Pelican parts

too funny, I found my old one AFTER I installed the new one from BMW

ohh well . . .

I can change a BMW water pump in under an hour now !! (and I will hopefully remember I have a backup when this new one goes in a year)
