I want to buy a diagnostic device, so I can read my own codes before I take my car to the mechanics. Anybody have a recommendation as to which I should buy? Question

I have the AutoXray EZ Scan 6000. Works well. They have several other models, too.

Whatever you buy, make sure it can access pending codes, and also provide a text description of the P-code. Some cheaper ones require you to look up the meaning of the code in their manual.

It should also have a real-time readout of operating parameters, so you can monitor the engine as it's running. As I recall, mine has something like 16-20 parameters.

Buy the best you can afford.
