I have $230,000 on my 99 328is and something just doesn't sound right or maybe my hearing has just gotten a little better. I'm turning 3000 rpms right at 80 mph. does that sound about right or is my automatic transmission acting up?

I'm hoping you mean 230 K miles, not dollars. I love my e36 but I sure would not give near a quarter of a megabuck for it.

In fifth gear my engine is turning about 3000 RPM at 70 MPH.

If you are hearing new noises from the tranny I would recomend taking it to a tranny shop to have it checked out. You may avoid the need for a rebuild.

230,000 miles strikes me as not too bad for an automatic tranny. Hitler's revenge (my wife's e32) would eat one every 50K miles at ~$4000 / ea. It was filled with some magic lifetime elexar at ~$300 / tranny full. It turned out lifetime meant the tranny's lifetime, not mine.

I have 223,000 miles on mine with original auto trany and engine RMP is slightly below 3000 at 80MPH on straight road, steady speed. I think you are fine but do check for noises as PJK suggested.

Thanks guys...yes i meant 230K miles not dollars, i must have been thinking about money when I wrote the original post.

I don't hear any clunking from the transmission so it sounds like I should be o.k. for another 230k, right?
