My 1997 528i ABS light came on when I rode through water the other night in rain storm. It has been on since. I must shift manually from 1st thru 5th.
I got a code PO500 , speed sensor.

Any ideas? I was wondering if it is front wheel sensor and if I swapped from front to back would shifting problem still be present???
Thanks,

John

I had that problem too. I had to replace the neutral saftey switch. The moisture gets in there and causes the car to shift irratically. When it dried out, it went back to shifting just fine on it's own. Thank God it didn't rain very much here in Arizona! Or this could possibly be the problem. I was told to try this. This is what I was told to do with my current tranny, abs, brake light and traction control problem. First, replace the RR wheel sensor, and connector, as required, to see if that will clear up the problem. It may do nothing for the trans, but, at least you'll have you ABS back.

The sensor is in the brake backing plate.

You may need to get the transmission codes read to see what that problem is.

I would go to a mechanic and get the codes red. Then, post the update on this forum, and someone will help. Do not start replacing things w/o a justifiable reason.
