My sister managed to let the steam out her '99 328i and quickly found out she had ruined the engine. My dad and brother (who works at a BMW dealership) found her a replacement engine and a mechanic who would do the swap for a meager $200. That was Christmas of 2008.

Fast forward to now, the car has sat untouched. The mechanic (and I am uninvolved so I have no bias one way or the other) hasn't done anything to the car. I struck up a conversation with my dad about the car as he has helped me basically overhaul my truck's engine and has rebuilt a number of diesels on the farm why he didn't just do the swap himself. He said that my brother said you need special tools to do it and they aren't for sale.

I kind of laughed at the last comment and said, let me look around and see what I can find. The Haynes manual doesn't state anything special is needed. I was told the car would have be hooked up to a BMW scan tool to reset the computer, but I have no idea why. I liken it to disconnecting the battery cable, etc, and I've never had to hook a car up to a scan tool after doing that.

So I just wanted to get some feed back, is doing the replacement a viable alternative? Is there anything special needed, such as the scan tool?
